Hostels
Hostels
Thailand has a good variety of hostels and budget accommodation options in almost all tourist destinations. Standards can vary immensely; a relatively small price increase can make for a much cleaner, secure, and more comfortable stay. Solo travellers can find decent hostels, with a fan, for around 300 THB per night in Bangkok and Phuket. Those staying outside the old city of Chiang Mai can get a bed in a good dorm for around 200 THB per night. Prices on the islands of Koh Phi Phi, Koh Tao, and Koh Phangan are often a little higher, at around 450 THB per night. Scoring a place for 150 THB per night is possible, though comfort levels are likely to be low.
Other accomodation options
Budget-conscious solo travellers who value their privacy are also advised to check out beach bungalows, small chalets, basic bamboo huts, and local guesthouses. It can be possible to snag a great deal on private accommodation; for example, a small fan-cooled bamboo hut in Kanchanaburi or Lopburi town should run at around 400 THB a night. For around 500 THB a night, basic rooms, typically with a shared bathroom and fan in the more touristy areas, can be found almost all across the country. The same price can secure a relatively plush room with air conditioning and a private bathroom in more off-the-beaten-track locales.
