Thailand is known for its delicious and often fiery food. The street food scene is huge, and most meals from a food cart are inexpensive, tasty, and filling. Rice and noodles are abundant. Vegetarian travellers can find it difficult at times, however, due to the presence of fish sauce in many meals.
Popular dishes include fried rice with various meats and vegetables, a spicy soup, known locally as tom yam, pad Thai noodles, various spicy curries, usually served with rice, and som tam, a spicy papaya salad. While establishments that are used to catering to foreign diners will generally tone down the spice levels, local restaurants may go overboard with chilli; so be sure to ask for dishes to just have a little spiciness if ‘hot’ is not your thing.
