Most of L.A.’s tourist attractions are situation on the Southland of the city and tend to be pretty safe, such as Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Westwood and Santa Monica. However, it is advised to be aware of one's surroundings at night as well as walk in larger groups after hours.
Certain areas in or near Downtown L.A., such as South Central and the infamous Skid Row can be avoided by foot altogether. Some tourists do end up in the Skid Row area while lost Downtown L.A. but tend to leave feeling down due to the high rate of poverty and open drug use in the area. The South Central area is known for its gang violence, however, gangs generally confine themselves to these areas and should be of little concern to the typical traveler, who is highly unlikely to venture into such areas.
