Hostels

Major tourist destinations and larger islands generally have a good selection of hostels, allowing solo travellers to keep costs down and meet other independent travellers with ease. Some hostels have communal kitchens, thereby enabling guests to save money on some meals. Standards can vary.

As a price guide, the average cost of a night in a dorm bed in a hostel in Jakarta is around 126,212 IDR (£7). In Yogyakarta, the average nightly price is 95,930 IDR. Bali’s Ubud is cheaper than Kuta, with the respective nightly averages being 86,503 IDR and 115,783 IDR. On the Gili Islands, travellers should expect to pay around 140,000 IDR for a night’s stay.

Homestays or basic guest houses may be the cheapest accommodation option in lesser-visited areas where hostels aren’t readily available.
