London is the UK's capital and largest city with between nine and 13 million people living in it, depending on how you classify. There are not many cities in the world with a richer history than London, going back thousands of years as a pre-Roman settlement and the more recent history having as much of an impact on western culture as anywhere on the planet.
London is also one of the most multicultural cities in the world, with more languages spoken (over 300) than any other city as well as having an embassy or official residence for every recognised country that there is. In 2012, London became the first and only city to have hosted the modern Olympic Games three times, the others being in 1908 and 1948. Sport plays a big part in the lives of many people in London, with some of the world’s biggest clubs based there including the soccer teams of Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Chelsea and rugby clubs such as Saracens. Wembley Stadium is arguably the most well known sports venue in the world, with regular international soccer matches as well as NFL games being played there.
Arts, film and music is also at the centre of London’s culture, bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Who were formed in the city, The Beatles and David Bowie played early gigs all around the Soho clubs. Films such as Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones and more recently Harry Potter were also filmed at the world famous Elstree Studios.
Samuel Johnson once remarked “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life” come to the city and find out exactly why he was so right.
