Located 700Km north of Bangkok, the fastest way to get to Chiang Mai is via plane. Chiang Mai international airport schedules frequent flights to Bangkok and various Southeast Asian cities as well as New Zealand and Australia. A cheaper and more thrilling experience to many is to make a journey into chiang Mai via rail. Chiang Mai Railway Station is the main station in Chiang Mai province and is situated 2km east of the city centre. A journey into the city from Bangkok (Hua Lamphong station) takes around 13 hours and it is often recommended to get the overnight/sleeper train which arrives early in the morning. Make sure you take layers with you in case you end up on the top bunk as the air con is often turned up and set to the coldest setting!
