Local markets in Cambodia are a colourful experience and should not be missed. Look for cheap and cheerful clothes, shoes, silver jewellery, unusual fruit, exotic spices, or just wander and take in the sights and smells. In between the stalls there’s often the opportunity to grab a steaming hot bowl of noodle soup, a sliced green mango with chilli and salt, or a ridiculously cheap haircut. Haggling is expected but the sellers drive a hard bargain. Don’t leave without a few pairs of elephant pants!
Cambodia is also an excellent place to get all kinds of beauty treatments for a fraction of the price back home. Rock up to any beauty spa to unwind with a massage, pedicure or facial on the cheap. But do tip the masseuse!
For beachy relaxation, head south to Sihanoukville and either opt for one of the further-flung beaches on the mainland (Ochheuteal or Otres) or head for the islands. Koh Rong is cheaper and livelier than its upmarket neighbour, Koh Rong Sanloem. The speed ferry from Sihanoukville only takes 45 minutes.
Finally, for a chance to get off the beaten track, consider a visit to Mondolkiri Province to trek in the jungle and visit the elephant sanctuary.
