Georgetown is the capital of the Malaysian state of Penang.  Backpackers enjoy George Town as a wonderful city that effortlessly blends the old and the new. Modern facilities can be found amongst the historic buildings and cool attractions are interspersed with funky street art and diverse religious buildings. Whispers of the past and a sense of nostalgia mingle with a forward-thinking approach, to create a vibe that’s completely unique. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage City, Georgetown, sometimes also spelt as George Town, was named after the English King George III, harkening back to the days of colonial rule in the area.

The second-largest city in the country, Georgetown is acclaimed for its vibrant street food scene. Often ranked among the world’s best places for foodies, it’s incredibly difficult to go hungry here. Each of the city’s major ethnic groups—the Malays, Chinese, and Indians—have played a part in making the delicious cuisine so popular. You’ll also notice influences from Europe and other Asian nations in some dishes!
